Student guide

Seven steps from an idea to an NHD entry

01

Choose a focused topic

Pick a historical topic that interests you, fits the annual theme, and is narrow enough for deep research.

02

Build historical context

Begin with high-quality secondary sources to understand what happened before and around your topic.

03

Find primary sources

Use materials created during the period—documents, images, artifacts, oral histories, and other first-hand evidence.

04

Compare perspectives

Look for sources from people with different experiences and viewpoints.

05

Develop a historical argument

State the central claim your project will prove, supported by evidence and analysis.

06

Choose a category

Select Documentary, Exhibit, Paper, Performance, or Website based on how you can communicate the history best.

07

Complete required written materials

Every entry needs a process paper and annotated bibliography.

Korea participation

What students need for the Korea affiliate

The Korea portal requires students to participate through a designated sponsor teacher at their school. Returning participants create a new account for each contest year, and group members link their projects during registration.

Research expectations

Use both primary and secondary sources to develop an original historical argument and consider multiple perspectives.

Required written work

Every entry includes an annotated bibliography and process paper in addition to the project itself.

Website projects

Website entries must be created in NHDWebCentral, NHD’s official website-building system.

Korea submission

Digital materials are submitted through the NHD Korea portal. Use the current Korea portal guide for contest-day attendance and submission instructions.
